| A water lily is an aquatic plant belonging to the genus Nymphaea. There are Tropical (annual) water lilies, and Hardy (perennial) water lilies. We offer a wide variety of water lilies and aquatic plants, which are grown on location in our greenhouses and field ponds. Come walk through our gardens to get some ideas for your own pond or take a look at some of our water lilies here! Tropical water lilies are best planted when daytime temperature averages 70 F, or from May 25 to September 1 (Long Island zone 7). They need at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily, but the more sun the better. Water temperature should be at least 65-70 F, but even warmer is better! Tropical water lilies are noted for their delightful fragrance, long blooming season and rich colors. They come in white, pink, yellow, purple and blue. They can cover a surface area anywhere between 5 square feet to over 100 square feet depending on the variety of lily and size of container it is planted in. They are heavy root feeders and should be fertilized once or twice a month during growing season. Night bloomers are not fragrant, need at least 6 hours direct sunlight, and cover more square footage than day bloomers. Here on Long Island, tropical water lilies usually stop flowering with the first heavy freeze (mid to late November). Click here to view a few of the varieties we grow
